Shop (and read) ’til you drop

As I mentioned last week, I’m launching initiatives and having sales all month long, starting this week! Today! Immediately! 

The big items this week are the launches of the humble onion online store and layers: the humble onion book club. I’ll also be giving away a free print and set of holiday cards when released! Read on to learn more about each of these and learn a bit about me outside of humble onion creative.

As long as I can remember, I wanted to make art for a living. If you asked me now what my dream life looks like, it’s to live in a desolate seaside/mountain town where I spend all day drawing, painting, reading, and writing.

Basically like this, which is very much not Alabama.

The humble onion store is a step toward doing that, so it’s more of a personal passion project than the service-based marketing you’re used to seeing from me.

Humble onion is light-hearted, bright, educational and informative. It’s my business and provides a service.

Me, as a person? I’m a little more dark. I enjoy sarcasm and I spend my free time reading thrillers, watching horror movies, and listening to everything from Iggy Pop to Doja Cat to Jason Isbell.

My art can be a little dark. I know it’s not for everyone.

But what I can promise is that what’s offered in the store will be ever-evolving as both popular culture and my interests change.

 

For this first launch, you’ll see prints based on a TV show and a tie to my community here in the Shoals. You can continue to expect these kinds of pieces (and yes, I do take commissions or idea inspiration).

You’ll also see branded stickers if you’d like to support my business, but each order will come with a free sticker no matter what! I’ve also got other stickers coming, but they weren’t absolutely perfect for this launch. So keep your eyes and onions peeled.

For now, I’m planning to add new items to the shop every two months, but if you sign up for my email blast, you’ll know immediately if I add anything!

Bonus tidbit: Everything in this launch is printed locally at Mitchell Printing. So when you purchase something from the store, you’re supporting local printers, too!

layers: a humble onion book club

I am SO excited about this one.

I love paper. I love books. I love learning. So when I put out feelers to launch a new book club focused on art, psychology, and marketing, I was elated to know there were others with the same interests and passions.

Starting Sept. 1, layers: a humble onion book club will officially begin!

Send me an email if you’re interested in joining. Right now we will only be communicating via Slack, a free app for mobile and/or desktop. 

From now until Sept. 1, we’ll vote on which book we want to start with so everyone has time to order it or download it. Every month we’ll read a different book, voted on by the group. Yay, democracy!

Some ideas I’ll be throwing out for the first book selection are:

Trust me, my list of potential books is much, much longer, so if these don’t interest you, something else definitely will. And you’re ALWAYS welcome to throw out your own ideas!

With this book club, my hope is that we walk away from every book with a more well-rounded understanding of not only our professions (we all market ourselves and our business in some way), but our understanding of how we’re receiving messages and perceiving marketing as the consumer.

It’s about awareness, responsibility, and creativity. And it’s for everyone, including you.

It’s August. What holiday cards?

So I haven’t released my holiday cards for this season yet, obviously. But the recipient can either have an IOU for the upcoming season’s drop (Four Christmases-themed) or last year’s cards, which were Nightmare Before Christmas and Elf-themed.
