The Duck It List Graphic
Humble Onion was approached by a dynamic duo interested in taking their travel blog to the next level. Their travel blog, called “The Duck It List,” was clever, punny, and right up our alley.
Scope and Objectives
The client wanted an illustrated logo that would later be animated. Their name, “The Duck It List,” was a play on two key phrases, they explained:
Travel being a part of one’s bucket list; and
Autocorrecting “fuck it” to “duck it,” as in “fuck it and take the trip.”
They explained they wanted a “cool” duck, ready for vacation, and a bucket somehow integrated.
We would provide all file types to the client, and would provide a referral for animation. We did attempt our own animation; however, we are admittedly not animators or motion graphics artists.
Implementation
We started with a vision board of how we wanted the logo to look and feel to the audience. After solidifying colors and general sketches, our illustrator Zaha got to work bringing the ideas to life.
The first option was to create a duck kicked back in a bucket, sunglasses on, drink in hand. Clearly ready for vacation!
Option two was combining the duck and bucket into one “creature” that would provide whimsy and “on-the-go” feelings.
The client decided on the former, and we tweaked the design in just a couple of proofs. After the logo was finalized, we referred them to an animator to create a GIF of the duck walking to – and splashing into – the bucket.
Our attempt at the GIF creation!
Conclusion
This was a fantastic project for us for several reasons, but the top three are:
The opportunity to create a whimsical design that leaves a lasting impression;
Connecting with other artists for services we don’t provide – we love to share the love; and
Building a relationship with a client who can trust our expertise and design eye to provide the exact look and feel they’re desiring.
