Remembering Leo III

When the University of North Alabama’s beloved lion, Leo III, passed away, there was a sad and urgent need to create material notifying the public.

The purpose of the project was critical:

  • Communicate the death of Leo III

  • Honor the memory

  • Create two posters

  • Create a social media graphic

Client Background

The University of North Alabama is the premier workforce university in Florence, Alabama. With 10,000 students, their challenge is to keep their stakeholders up-to-date, often requiring last-minute designs.

Working with the Office of University Media and Public Relations, we were able to quickly create a design they could be proud of.

Project Scope and Objectives

UNA requested two 24” x 36” posters, printing arrangements, and a social media square to accompany the announcement online.

The timeline was incredibly short – within 24 hours.

Execution and Implementation

With a short time frame, there was no room for a discovery phase, strategy, or planning.

We quickly utilized the press release and all available images for the process. We chose images that reflected Leo’s personality, and used stock photos that would complement his vibrant photo courtesy of Matt McKean.

While the items were proofed, we coordinated with local print shops to facilitate the print process for UNA.

Edits were made immediately, finalized, and sent to the vendors. The entire project, from start to hanging in the habitat, was 48 hours.

Conclusion

Had we not built a long-standing relationship with UNA, this project would not have been completed as quickly. By understanding the expectations, resources, and community needs, we were able to create these items through partnership.
